Lentil Soup with Sausages

This cozy Lentil Soup with Sausages is a dish I grew up eating at my grandparents’ house almost weekly, made with cleaner and better ingredients, but still so comforting and delicious!

I believe that a healthy diet and lifestyle can include all the traditional foods that we grew up eating, if we simply substitute a few of the ingredients. For example, for Sazón and Adobo that is free of MSG and other food additives, I recommend Loisa or make your own.


This nutritious, well-balanced soup counts as a meal if you enjoy a generous portion. Lentils are rich in protein, fiber, iron and folate. Lentil soup packs well for lunch in a leak-proof container, and it tastes even better the next day!


Ingredients: 1 tbsp avocado oil

4 sausages of your choice (we used Continental Sausage Co.’s Smoked Bratwurst), cut in small pieces 1 white onion, diced (about 3⁄4 cup) 1 large carrots, diced (about 1⁄2 cup) 1 bell pepper (any color), diced (about 1⁄2 cup) 5 green onions, chopped 2 tbsp garlic, chopped 1 lb brown lentils 1 tbsp Adobo Loisa 1 tbsp Sazon Loisa 1 bay leaf 8 cups water (for cooking) Salt to taste

*Before you cook the lentils* Soak the lentils in water for 2-3 hours. ​To do it, pour your lentils in a large pot and cover them with cold water. Drain the water and give the lentils another quick rinse with fresh, cold water and you’re all set to cook them.

Directions: Heat 1⁄2 tbsp oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the sausages, and cook until golden brown on both sides, about 5 minutes. Transfer the sausages to a plate and set aside. In the same skillet, heat up the remaining oil. Add the onions and carrots and cook for about 3 minutes. Then, add bell peppers, green onions and garlic and cook for another 2-3 minutes.

Transfer the cooked veggies to a large pot. Add water, lentils, adobo, sazon, bay leaf, and salt and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to low and cover the pot. Cook until the lentils are tender, stirring occasionally for about 40 minutes. Add the reserved sausages, mix and adjust seasonings as needed.
